The Island of Saba
How to Get There From St. Maarten...

THE UNSPOILED QUEEN - A PLACE OF TRANQUILITY...

Nicknamed the ‘Unspoiled Queen’, the island of Saba is simply a place you should not miss when you want to visit some getaways located near St. Maarten. If you truly want to enjoy the best out of your stay in Saba, you should know a few facts about the island before even traveling there. This Saba article will cover everything related to making an enjoyable trip to the island of Saba from St. Maarten.

checkTRAVELLING FROM ST MAARTEN TO SABA

Maarten of tours, the Saint for which St. Martin Island was named after was chosen by Christopher Columbus after discovering the group of islands in the area. Throughout the century, St. Maarten became one of the leading destinations in Caribbean travel. Because of its popularity, it has become the gateway for travelers wishing to visit the outlying islands like the island of Saba.

There are two ways to visit Saba – Airport or Seaport.

checkTRAVEL FROM ST MAARTEN BY AIR.

The airline that serves interisland travel between the St. Maarten and Saba is Windward Island Airways. Saba Airport, also known as the Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport is the only airport located on Saba. As of this writing, the average price for a one way airfare is USD77.35 while round trip tickets costs USD137.35 as seen from the main airline website, Winward Island Airways.

checkST MAARTEN TO SABA BY SEA

Two main ferries ply the St. Maarten – Saba route every day, Dawn II and The Edge.

Dawn II has main offices in Fort Bay, Saba. However, you can easily order tickets through their main website at Dawn II Ferries!. for more details. As of this writing, the average cost for a one way ferry ticket from St. Maarten to the Island of Saba is $48. The other way around, the ticket costs $45. A round trip ticket costs $90 while a same-day round trip ticket will fetch cheaper at $68.

The Edge operates more modern ferries compared to its counterpart. As of this writing, a daytrip ticket costs $75 while a one way ticket costs $50. Tickets for children are priced at half the regular price. You can visit their website at The Edge Ferry.for more details.

Both ferries dock at Fort Bay.

Saba Cruises are popular but unfortunately, there seem to be no cruises that allow the entry of travelers in St. Maarten. These cruises are mostly aimed at an overall cruise to all major Caribbean islands.

checkTRANSPORTATION IN SABA.

The taxi is probably the most preferred method of transportation in Saba. Although the island is small, hiking may be out of the question especially for old travelers since the trails or roads can be too steep at certain locations.

checkTHE CAPITAL OF SABA - THE BOTTOM

As unusual as it sounds, The Bottom is the largest town in the island of Saba. Furthermore, it is also the capital. With this, it is host to many activities that can entice visitors such as the ‘Saba Carnival’ and the ‘Saba Day’. The Saba Carnival usually lasts from the last week of July to early August while Saba Day is celebrated every 6th of December.

checkWINWARD SIDE TOWN

A popular activity done by many travelers is taking a taxi to tour them around the island and doing a little shopping and dining in Windwardside before going back to St. Maarten. This is because this town has more groceries, dining areas, and gift shops compared to the capital. The town is also home to many hotels and inns.

checkTHE ISLAND'S ECOTOURISM

There is another good reason why Windwardside is a popular destination among tourists. Because there is only one beach in Saba, which unfortunately only shows up at certain seasons, there are only two ways to truly enjoy Saba – diving and trekking.

Diving can be done near Saba Deep if you manage to contact good dive operators there. If diving does not suit your taste, they can take you to good places where you can snorkel.

Trekking is another activity that can be enjoyed in the island of Saba. You can take a hike from your hotel in Windwardside to the many hiking trails near the rain forest. However, always make sure you have trail personnel to accompany you along the way.

checkA FEW POINTS TO REMEMBER

  • Always bring a map of Saba wherever you go forget renting a car. Some roads in the island of Saba need repair and may shock you if you are not used to driving in such road conditions.
  • A ferry ride normally does not last for more than an hour. However, you may get sea sick with the choppy waters.
  • The plane ride lasts only 10 minutes, but the airport in the island of Saba is considered one of the most dangerous airports in the world. But an exciting landing.
    • Enjoy your trip to Saba. Dutch Caribbean Island of Saba is a destination you should not miss.
