Enjoy a diverse cuisine
with a multitude of flavors...
The
diverse variety of restaurants on St Maarten and their cuisines reflect
the heritage of the island.
St Maarten has had a wide mix of cultural influences, and just like the
other Caribbean islands, St Marteen's cuisine reflects its own unique
cultural heritage. The French, Dutch, African and Indian historical
influences are most evident and have created many tantalizing and mouth
watering dishes.
The original inhabitants of the Caribbean islands
(the Arawaks and Caribs) spiced their foods with chili peppers, a
culinary feature which is maintained today.
The
Arawaks are credited with developing the barbecuing techniques unique to
the area. The Arawaks barbequed their food by making grills from native
green sticks called barbacoa. The crops tended by these original
inhabitants included taro root, corn, yams, cassava, and peanuts. Guavas
and pineapple, as well as black-eyed peas and lima beans which grew wild
on the islands. These ingredients have now become a mainstay of the
local cuisine.
Typical
dishes you can experience at restaurants St Maarten include seasoned meats, commonly
chicken, and usually prepared with a unique, spicy flavor. Rice is also
a prime food. It is eaten with a variety of flavoring and sauces and
also with beans.
Seafood is abundant, and it is one of the most common foods eaten on St Maarten. This is certainly due in part to its location. A wide variety
of fish and shell fish are common fare across the island, and when you
come to our island simply 'must' try the seafood.
The restaurants on St Maarten range from road side stalls where you can
experience the local tasty treats through to 5 star resorts.
However,
one thing is certain, wherever you choose to eat you are guaranteed to
experience some of the most mouth watering dishes in the World. I will
continually add new 'eateries' to this page (road side stalls, cafes,
restaurants).
